Queensland: A unique opportunity

As Australia’s second largest state, Queensland is a major supplier of the minerals we export around the world. In our role as a major supplier, we also play a part in this country’s reputation for extracting and delivering minerals reliably, securely and ethically.

So, for investors hunting for the next investment in critical minerals, Queensland is the place to be.

Our critical minerals

Queensland has some of the richest mineral producing areas, with key enabling infrastructure already in place. There are emerging vanadium suppliers, as well as new projects for cobalt being explored, with significant potential from existing and abandoned mine-site tailings.

High-purity alumina projects in Queensland are also showing early success and companies are ready for new partners.

Government support

Alongside our rich resources, the Queensland Government's legislated renewable energy targets and investment in future energy infrastructure means our mineral projects are ready to command 'green price premiums'.

We are already known as a fast, easy and flexible mining jurisdiction to do business with, but the Queensland Government is doing more: actively advocating and supporting the development of more critical mineral projects across the state, including accelerating the exploration, extraction, processing and value-adding of critical minerals.

This commitment is demonstrated through targeted policies that also complement national incentives, including the Queensland Critical Mineral Strategy, which oversees $315 million of initiatives to move faster and smarter, maximise investment, build value chains and foster research and environmental, social and governance (ESG) excellence.

Ready for the future

The Queensland Government has a 30-year plan to grow and diversify the resources industry. Through our Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan (QRIDP) we will ensure our traditional resource commodity strengths in the coal and gas sectors remain stronger for longer, and that we are ready to capitalise on the global demand for critical minerals.

The resources and critical minerals industry in Queensland is backed by strong local demand for the renewable energy equipment needed to meet the Queensland Government’s commitment to renewable energy and net zero emissions. The Queensland Battery Industry Strategy (PDF, 3MB) will position Queensland as a driving force in the development, manufacture and deployment of new energy storage technologies.
