Case studies

The Queensland Government has a long history of successfully partnering with the resources sector to propel the industry forward. Here are some examples of what we've achieved together.

Establishing Resources Safety and Health Queensland

In 2020, the Queensland Government established Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), an independent statutory body with a vision for a zero serious harm resource sector in Queensland.

RSHQ is responsible for regulating, educating and assisting the resources industry to meet their obligations to protect and promote the safety and health of all workers.

As a risk-based regulator, it focuses its resources and effort on protecting workers and affected communities from:

  • fatality
  • injury requiring hospital admission
  • occupational disease, such as mine dust lung disease.

Enabling the coal seam gas industry

The gas industry is one example of how well Queensland’s resources industry and government can pivot to meet the global market’s changing needs.

It all began with the release of a state-government policy that signalled Queensland’s ambition for a world-class coal seam gas (CSG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, and secured local demand for natural gas.

Four years after the release of the policy, exploration and production had boomed and there were 8 proposals to export gas from Queensland.

Fast forward 5 years and we saw a seven-fold increase in production and a huge ramp up in ‘proven and probable’ (2P) reserves. A multi-billion-dollar investment ushered in the world’s first CSG-LNG export industry, linking upstream production in the Surat and Bowen Basins to downstream processing on Curtis Island near Gladstone.

Now, this previously small, local industry has transformed into an export powerhouse, generating more than $66 billion in export earnings and making Australia the world’s largest exporter of seaborne LNG.
