Group of surveyors gathered around a tripodOur surveyors maintain the cadastral (land boundary) integrity of the state of Queensland. They investigate and provide advice on surveying matters, undertake
field surveys on behalf of the department, contribute to the state's geodetic infrastructure and support the integration of spatial data in the Resources environment.

Learn how Chris Serpell, Senior Surveyor at Land and Surveying Services, Lands is working with their team on Native Title Determinations for First Nations people.

Key projects

  • Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park surveys to enable the return of ownership to the Traditional Owners following Native Title Determination to the Waanyi people. This is a large area in North-West Queensland on which some property
    boundaries are also the Queensland state boundary with the Northern Territory. This has been a very challenging but rewarding survey that has been performed over numerous field campaigns involving many Resources surveying staff.
  • K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) surveys, creating negotiated parcels for transfer of land to the Butchulla people.
  • Identification surveys for the department’s Land Services and State Land Management to clearly define any improvements near to boundaries for the management of state land.
  • Monitoring surveys for dams of abandoned mines to confirm integrity of the existing dam structures, across northern Queensland.
  • Calibration of Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) ranges across the State, providing access to industry for calibration of scientific equipment under the National Measurement Act 1960.

Our Spatial information (SI) team operate under government legislation to acquire, manage and provide access to Queensland’s core spatial datasets, delivered through world-class spatial information system solutions.

Type of work

  • Contribute to the creation of innovative solutions and automated processes to support the operations of spatial platforms and applications, spatial data management and delivery of products and services.
  • Utilise various spatial tools such as the Esri ArcGIS suite, Power BI, Automation flows to develop business process and solutions.
  • Create documentation of spatial applications including configuration, information management procedures, application support models, service continuity and user guides are developed and maintained.
  • Provide strategic spatial advice, direction and proactive education to internal and external stakeholders and project teams to enable an appreciation of geospatial practices in accordance with government initiatives and objectives.
  • Assist internal and external customers to ensure the business unit meets the needs of those customers.

Our Valuers deliver land valuations and maintain the valuation roll on behalf of rateable local governments across Queensland in return for the payment of regulated fees, as well as providing specialised property advisory services and information to other government agencies.
